PlasticsJOBS and MAPP’s 2nd Annual Hiring Trends and Salary Survey Reveals a
Plastics Industry Workforce More Apt to Switch Jobs

59% of Respondents Are Either Actively Seeking a Job Now, Plan to Shop for a Job
within the Next 12 Months, or Might be Persuaded to Leave

Brentwood, TN – PlasticsJOBS by Gros Executive Recruiters (www.PlasticsJOBS.com), an executive recruiting firm that specializes in the plastics and packaging industry, unveiled the findings today from their salary and hiring trends survey of the plastics and packaging industry. Mid-America Plastics Partners (MAPP), a network of plastics processors, co-sponsored the survey. Among the most revealing of the findings was the fact that 59% of all respondents are either actively seeking a job now, plan to shop for a job within the next 12 months, or might be persuaded to leave. “As recently as a year or two ago, employees were a lot more cautious and reserved about making a move to another company due to the precarious economic situation,” says Dennis Gros, president of Gros Executive Recruiters. “While the plastics industry continues to face a variety of challenges, I find this renewed confidence in employment mirrors the cautiously optimistic demeanor of the industry as a whole.” Continues Gros: “So what does this mean? I think this should serve as a wake-up call to plastics industry employers to not be complacent in their retention efforts and to be aware that losing good employees will ultimately affect their bottom line. I also think it’s time for employers to make more of an investment in training dollars which will make employees feel more valued and these same employees become more valuable to the company as a result.” “This survey equips processors with valuable information to help them benchmark their hiring and compensation strategies, which is why I felt it important for MAPP to be involved and supportive of this effort,” said Troy Nix, executive director of MAPP.

OTHER SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Growth is on many company’s minds: Overall, 49% of companies surveyed plan to grow their number of full-time employees. Companies the size of 26-99 employees are the most likely to increase their employee roster (30%).

  • Headcount reductions are also on some company’s minds: 11% of companies surveyed plan to shrink their workforce: Companies the size of 26-99 are the most likely to decrease their employment roster (Note: they were also the employee sized company most likely to increase their employee roster – see above.)

  • Employers won’t be quite as generous as employees expect: Overall, 30% of employees expect raises in excess of 4%, while only 24% of employers expect to raise employees’ pay by that amount. Within the 21-34 year old age group, 50% expect pay raises in excess of more than 3%, while only 25% of the managers of this age group are ready to increase their workers pay by that amount

Hiring Trends/Salary Survey Background and Structure

After recognizing that no hiring or salary trend information existed on a comprehensive basis across the plastics and packaging industry, PlasticsJOBS by Gros Executive Recruiters instituted the hiring and salary trends survey to provide the industry with a better understanding of the hiring climate and salary trends. PlasticsJOBS first surveyed plastics and packaging professionals about salary trends back in 2004, and then surveyed those in the industry with hiring responsibility in the Spring of 2005 to reveal hiring trends. This 2nd Annual 2006 survey combined both surveys. The survey will continue to be repeated on an annual basis. Salary data gathered from individuals is designed to reveal comprehensive trend information surrounding compensation, benefits, job security and satisfaction for the plastics and packaging industry. Data gathered from plastics and packaging industry hiring managers includes comprehensive trend information surrounding hiring, compensation and employee turnover rates.

About MAPP

In the 1990’s, a group of processors gathered on a routine basis to discuss issues that were relevant to running their businesses. They were intrigued by how much they accomplished by focusing ONLY on processor issues. Looking to explore further what a united group of processors could accomplish, they incorporated the Mid-America Plastics Partners (MAPP) in August 1996 as a not-for-profit trade association. MAPP, the organization created by processors and for processors, has since become the fastest growing processor group of its kind in the country. The MAPP network consists of plastics processors (injection molders, rotational molders, blow molders, vacuum formers, extruders, compression molders, and more...) and all its activities continue to be driven by the plastics processors.
